Call for Book Recommendations Editor!
Posted on
We regret to announce that Book Recommendations Editor Michael Pittard have amicably stepped down from his roles to focus on bigger and better things. We’re forever grateful for what he brought to The Bookends Review, and we wish him the best of luck moving forward.
Obviously, that means that we’re now looking for a new Book Recommendations Editor! Interested?!
Please see the expectations below and email Editor-in-Chief Jordan Blum (jordanblum@thebookendsreview.com) by with an essay/review writing sample and any other qualifications you think are applicable and valuable. (The sample can be previously published; we just need to see how you write.)
Also, please be aware that this remains an unpaid position (it certainly looks good on your resume, though, and is surely a fulfilling way to be a part of the independent literary community and a great team)!
As our new Book Recommendations Editor, you should be prepared to:
*Write a book recommendation from time to time (ideally, at least one every other month). These should be around 500 words minimum and are framed more like academic and cultural dissections of literature than scored reviews. Please see the ones we’ve already published to get a feel for the style!
*Vote on applicable submissions during our open reading periods (typically, May 1st – August 31st and December 1st – January 31st) within a month of when we receive them. (Of course, if your schedule gets too busy, we’ll work with you so that you don’t feel overwhelmed!)
If you vote to reject a piece, it’s automatically rejected; if you vote to accept it, Editor-in-Chief
Jordan Blum will look at it and make a final decision.
*Seek out other people to write about books and then edit those pieces. For instance, we get a lot of press releases for books to review. Sometimes, the E-i-C can cover it, but if not, perhaps the Book Recommendations Editor can (or the BRE can find someone outside of TBR to review it).
*Possibly provide other content (interviews, lists, etc.) and work with the rest of the team on things like contests, collaborations, etc.
*Check your email address regularly and respond to applicable queries in a timely and informed manner. Of course, you’ll also CC the Editor-in-Chief on all correspondences just so he knows what’s going on.
*Help promote and grow The Bookends Review as much as you can by doing things like sharing information on social media, telling friends and family about us, etc.
Please let us know if you have any questions, and thank you for your interest and help! We can’t wait to read your applications and potentially bring you onboard 😊
