Gila Green

Gila Green is a Canadian writer, editor, and EFL teacher. As the daughter of a Yemenite-Israeli father and an Ashkenazi-Canadian mother, she often writes about the immigrant experience, including dislocation, alienation, and racism. She spent time in South Africa before settling in Israel where she lives with her husband and five children. She is the author of White Zion, two adult novels (Passport Control and King of the Class), and her short works have appeared in dozens of literary magazines and anthologies. Yorba, Yorba

Yorba, yorba ,” his aunt yells from the back row of the van. “It’s spelled with a J,” she says in English, “but said like Y.”

I nod but don’t turn from the window. I can no longer keep track of what language we are in – Hebrew, Yiddish, Hungarian. Even English sounds foreign at this point. All I know is that we are forever going yorba – left. Maybe it’s illegal to turn right in Israel.

We are driving to the Dead Sea. All week, David’s aunt, uncle, and cousins have been telling us we must see the Dead Sea. So on the last day of our visit, we set out in the morning from the rocky Mediterranean coast. The dripping bougainvillea reminds me of Southern California as do the highways signs, written in English, Hebrew, and Arabic, that use the same green metal and bold font as American ones.

Writer and photographer Michael Dickel has work in several print and online publications. He co-edited Voices Israel Volume 36 (2010), and was managing editor for arc-23 and -24. His most recent book, The Palm Reading after The Toad’s Garden, came out in 2016. Previous books are: War Surrounds Us, Midwest / Mid-East, and The World Behind It, Chaos… He has taught at colleges and universities in both Israel and the U.S.
