Free Fall

Immense vociferations echoed through the amusement park from the terrified onlookers as bright blue sparks spat from the back of the “Number One” roller coaster that was stuck upside down on its final loop.

“We have to keep calm, I’m sure that the emergency crews are on their way” Robert stated as he attempted to alleviate the trepidation that had captured both he and his best friend.

“It’s been fifteen minutes, I know they’ll get here but I doubt it will be easy-” Jake replied before profusely vomiting from the nausea that he struggled to contain.

“This high in the air isn’t a good place to be but it’ll be okay soon!” Robert exclaimed, trying to calm the other distraught riders most of whom were young children that dangled behind them.

With each minute, his palpitating chest thundered more rapidly as his heart desperately tried to prevent the blood from pooling in his head while his breath became more laborious. He and Jake held tightly onto the guardrails before them to ease the burden on their weakening hearts but it helped little. They could see the horrified onlookers on the ground gaze at them with pitting eyes while some recorded their tragedy with their cellphones.  With each minute, one of the distressed children trapped behind them would emit a heart-wrenching scream or plea for help under laborious breaths as their arms and back shot lines of pain.

Suddenly, a loud creek came from the back of the roller coaster, followed by a slight jolt forward.

“I think it’s going to start moving again!” one of the trapped men exclaimed with joy.

“We’re finally coming down” Jake sighed as he exhaled a breath of relief.

“We’re coming down!” Robert proclaimed and loud cheers from the ecstatic crowd of onlookers greeted his proclamation as they leapt and hugged each other now that the tragedy was almost over.

However, the rounds of cheers suddenly gave way to a disconcerting silence as more bright blue sparks spat from the back of the ride.  It was the emergency brake that had secured the rollercoaster from free fall that had finally stopped working.
