Children search clouds
              for bunnies and puppy dogs

but find only
              stampedes of thundering water

buffalo, spooked
              and hale horned, tsunamis

of great whites foaming
              at the mouth.

Air coils
              around their ankles

like snakes poised
              to swallow whole.
