John Van Dreal

A third-generation Van Dreal artist, John began creative endeavors such as painting and writing at age 7. He earned his formal education in fine art and educational psychology, maintaining careers in both fields while writing in his spare time. He has published numerous articles and two books on violence prevention and threat assessment and is considered a leading expert on behavioral threat assessment and threat management. He is a musician and an award-winning artist, with work featured in a number of notable collections. A jack of many trades and a master of some, he uses his creative vision and straightforward style of prose and poetry to explore both the darker and lighter sides of human behavior. He has spent three decades observing and adoring quirky people at their best and worst amid the backdrop of Salem, one of Oregon’s most interesting towns. He lives with his wife, dog, and one cat. He is currently writing a novel.
